Rare and complex Craniofacial Surgery successful at Shri Siddhivinayak Ganapati Cancer Hospital
Oral Cancer surgeries are common place now. But a 50 yr old textile mill worker, met our senior cancer surgeon, Dr. Vivek Kulkarni in our OPD with a rather unique and complicated tumour. It started as a small mass in his Lt nasal cavity but due to prolonged neglect it went on to involve Lt maxilla, ethmoid sinuses, Lt orbit and breaking though the skull base it went on to lie just below the brain! Due to these complications& extension, no other doctor was accepting his case. At Shri Siddhivinayak Ganapati Cancer Hospital he was assured that his surgery can be done safely and effectively.
Consequently he was planned for surgery where the Lt upper jaw with Lt maxilla, Lt intranasal part of tumourLt eyeballwith orbital contents & the intracranial extensionof the tumour as well was removed. All this was removed as a monoblock resection. The hole in dura was repaired with pericranium, artificial dura and gel foam were kept in layers. The patient went home with no CSF leak (which is most common complication in such cases)on day 7. Dr. Vivek Kulkarni was assisted in this 4 and half hour long endeavour by Dr. DarshanaPande (our in-house Anaesthesiologist) and Dr. Sanjeev Kulkarni (Neurosurgeon). Patient was post-operatively managed in our ICU & discharged on 7th day.
